             Westmoreland County Volunteers

Deployed to Devastated Areas of Iowa

The American Red Cross, Westmoreland County Chapter has deployed volunteers in support of the massive disaster relief operation taking place in Iowa.

On Friday June 6th, veteran volunteer Roz Butler of Belle Vernon was deployed to tornado and flood ravaged Cedar Rapids, IA.  She has been assigned to Disaster Health Services as a manager of a shelter nursing station.  This is Ms. Butler’s 7th national deployment.  In a recent email to chapter staff, Ms. Butler described her experience:  “…water is everywhere.  The T.V. does not do this flood justice.”……………………………………………………………………………………………………...Mary Comer on assignment in Cedar Rapids, IA

Two more volunteers, Pat Good and Jane Murtland both of Greensburg, were deployed to Des Moines, IA on Saturday June 7, 2008.  They are working as case managers interviewing residents who have been affected the devastating flooding.  This is the third national deployment for Ms. Good and Ms. Murtland.

Mary Comer of Plum, Marie Howland of Latrobe and Margie Johnson and Paula Mizikar both of Greensburg, joined the 3 other volunteers assigned to the American Red Cross service center in Cedar Rapids, IA.  The volunteers will serve as case workers collecting information from residents affected by the wide spread flooding and helping them to get the immediate shelter, food, clothing, and medicine their families need.  Their assignment is expected to last for three weeks.

Pat Good, Jane Murtland and Roz Butler were sent on a two week assignment, however, due to the overwhelming need for relief services and a shortage of volunteers to provide those services they have agreed to extend their deployment for an additional 2 weeks.

The cost of this historic disaster relief operation is conservatively estimated to exceed $15,000,000.  The American Red Cross is asking citizens in every state to help those affected. Cash donations allow us to meet the unique needs of each client by providing them with the means to purchase the items they need the most. A gift to the Disaster Relief Fund allows us to help victims of disaster anywhere, at any time.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the tornadoes and flooding in the central United States, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster, please do so at the time of your donation. Call 1-800-HELP-NOW (1-800-435-7669) or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).
