VOLUNTEERING: Disaster Services

CLERICAL: Organizing training folders, creating and maintaining spreadsheets, filing, mailing, data entry, etc.

SPEAKERS'S BUREAU: Presenting informative programs to various groups.

DISASTER ACTION TEAM (DAT): Our chapter has an organized disaster action team (DAT). This is a group of trained Red Cross paid and/or volunteer staff that is sent to the scene of a disaster to provide immediate disaster relief to those affected by disaster and as required, to emergency workers responding to the incident. Our DAT traditionally meets the third Tuesday of every month form 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at our Chapter House. We accept new members monthly. Training is held throughout the year in order for members to continue with their disaster education. Disaster training is free to the public.

DISASTER SERVICES HUMAN RESOURCE MEMBERS (DSHR): After one becomes involved on the local level, they may have the option to join the DSHR System and be assigned to National Assignments. Often times, a hurricane or tornado touch down and suddenly a community that was thriving hours before is destroyed. The efforts of local disaster volunteers often are quickly dwarfed in comparison to the destruction and number of people affected. It happens all the time. And when it does, the DSHR System fires into action, moving highly trained and experienced Red Cross disaster volunteers into affected area quickly and efficiently. It can be five blocks or 5,000 miles from your home.

The DSHR System is an actually designed volunteer with a career-development path within Disaster Services. It is an opportunity to have more, do more, and be more on a disaster.
